A More Natural, Personalized Approach to Jaw Pain, Tension, and Better Sleep

You deserve to eat, smile, talk, and sleep comfortably. Let’s work together to help you feel better.

Does your jaw ache when you chew? Do you wake up with a tight jaw, experience frequent headaches, or feel tension in your face and neck? Perhaps you’ve been clenching your teeth, grinding at night, or relying on a mouthguard without getting the relief you hoped for.

You are not alone—and there may be more options to explore.

At Simple Healing Physical Therapy in Scottsdale, Arizona, I take a personalized, whole-body approach to treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and dysfunction. With decades of physical therapy experience and additional training in holistic approaches to healing, I look beyond the symptoms to understand what may be contributing to your discomfort.

My goal isn’t simply to help your jaw feel better today. It’s to help you move more comfortably, sleep better, understand your body, and learn how to care for yourself for the future.

What Is TMJ Dysfunction?

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJs) are located just in front of your ears. They connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to chew, speak, yawn, and open and close your mouth.

When these joints or the surrounding muscles aren’t working comfortably, you may experience a temporomandibular disorder (TMD), commonly called TMJ dysfunction.

TMJ problems can affect much more than your jaw. Because the muscles and structures of your jaw, head, and neck work together, discomfort may also show up as headaches, facial tension, neck pain, or difficulty getting comfortable at night.

The good news is that many people can improve their symptoms with conservative treatments, including physical therapy and appropriate self-care.

Do Any of These TMJ Symptoms Sound Familiar?

TMJ discomfort can affect people in different ways. You might experience one symptom or several.

  • Jaw pain or tenderness when chewing, talking, or yawning.
  • Clicking or popping when opening or closing your mouth.
  • Jaw clenching or teeth grinding, during the day or while sleeping.
  • Frequent headaches or tension around your temples.
  • Facial tightness or discomfort around your cheeks, ears, or jaw muscles.
  • Neck pain and shoulder tension that seem to accompany your jaw symptoms.
  • Limited jaw movement or difficulty opening your mouth comfortably.
  • Restless sleep or waking with jaw tension, leaving you feeling less refreshed.

You may have tried a mouthguard, massage, or other approaches without getting the results you wanted. Or perhaps you’re simply tired of living with discomfort and wondering what else might help.

You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

Why Does TMJ Pain Develop?

There isn’t always one single cause of TMJ pain. Often, several factors work together.

Possible contributors include:

  • Clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth.
  • Stress and increased tension in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders.
  • Muscle imbalances or restricted movement.
  • Previous injury or irritation involving the jaw joint.
  • Neck discomfort and changes in posture or movement.
  • Daily habits that repeatedly strain sensitive jaw muscles and joints.

Sometimes, the source of your discomfort isn’t obvious. That’s why I take time to understand your individual symptoms, movement patterns, daily habits, and goals before developing a treatment approach.

Rather than treating every jaw the same way, I work with you to understand what your body may need.

A Different Approach to TMJ Relief at Simple Healing Physical Therapy

Decades of Experience. A Whole-Person Perspective.

My background combines traditional physical therapy with decades of learning about the body’s interconnected systems and natural approaches to healing.

At Simple Healing Physical Therapy, I bring together the methods that best fit your needs, which may include:

Traditional Physical Therapy

Assessment of movement, muscle function, posture, and contributing factors, along with appropriate exercises and strategies to improve comfortable movement.

Craniosacral Therapy

A gentle, hands-on approach that focuses on the head, neck, and related tissues. It may be incorporated when appropriate to help address tension and support relaxation.

Somato-Emotional Release

An approach that recognizes the relationship between physical sensations, emotional experiences, and patterns of tension. When appropriate, this work can help you explore how stress and bodily tension may interact.

Qi Gong and Mindful Movement

Gentle movement, breathing, and body awareness practices that can help you develop relaxation skills and become more aware of tension patterns.

STIM-POD Treatment

I also use a STIM-POD device as part of my treatment approach when appropriate. This technology is used to provide gentle stimulation intended to help modulate pain and calm the nervous system.

Every person is different. Your treatment is tailored to your symptoms, comfort level, and goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all routine.

Could TMJ Treatment Help You Sleep Better?

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding can contribute to muscle soreness, facial tension, and discomfort that interferes with restful sleep.

When jaw and surrounding muscle tension improve, some people also notice that sleeping becomes more comfortable.

Some patients may find they need their mouthguard less as their symptoms improve. However, results vary, and physical therapy does not replace dental evaluation or treatment when needed. If you use a prescribed mouthguard, consult your dentist before changing how you use it.

My aim is to help you explore the factors contributing to your discomfort and find a treatment approach that supports better function, greater comfort, and improved quality of life.

One-on-One Care That Focuses on You

At Simple Healing Physical Therapy, you receive individualized attention—not a generic treatment plan.

I take time to listen to your concerns, understand how your symptoms affect your life, and work with you toward meaningful goals.

Together, we can focus on:

  • Reducing jaw and facial discomfort.
  • Improving comfortable jaw and neck movement.
  • Identifying habits and movement patterns that may contribute to tension.
  • Learning relaxation and self-care techniques.
  • Developing strategies to help manage symptoms between visits.
  • Building skills that may help reduce the likelihood of recurring problems.

I believe that understanding your body is an important part of healing. That’s why education is a central part of your treatment.

Learn How to Care for Yourself—Now and in the Future

My goal is not simply to provide hands-on treatment. I want you to leave with a better understanding of your body and practical ways to care for yourself.

Depending on your needs, we may work on gentle exercises, movement awareness, relaxation techniques, and everyday habits that support comfortable jaw and neck function.

These tools can help you take a more active role in managing your symptoms and maintaining your progress.

You are an important part of your own healing process. My role is to guide you, help you discover what works for you, and give you skills you can continue using long after your appointment.
