Somato-Emotional Release

Somato-Emotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that uses and expands on the principles of Craniosacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma.

The newest research is proving that there is memory inside every cell in the body and when we have physical or emotional trauma, it may be stored inside these cells. This can often form an “energy cyst” as coined by John Upledger, DO and Dr. Elmer Green. If a person has a traumatic injury such as a fall or an assault, unwanted energy is forced onto the body causing disorganized energy to enter the body. This does not pass through the body, but assimilates into it, causing a disruption. In the meantime, if it is accompanied by pain, fear, or emotion, these properties may be trapped in the cells of the body, causing further disruption. We will be aware of the trauma and the pain, but are not cognitively aware of the storing of that trauma in the body. One example is Post Traumatic Syndrome (PTSD). The individual understands that they have reactions due to trauma, but not how or why they are responding as they do. Using SER the practitioner can assist the client to connect to areas inside the body that have formed cysts, and then release them, relieving the client of the reactionary responses that they have learned due to the trauma, and allowing the body to return to a normal state. This treatment has been life-saving to many who have been unable to function due to their trauma.

In one example of this release, I had a 53-year-old male patient who came to me for low back pain. I noticed during his evaluation that he walked with one foot turned inwards at a 30-degree angle. I asked if he had injured his hip when he hurt his back. His answer was that he had injured the hip during a fall at the age of 13. I inquired if he broke the leg or caused structural damage at the time and he replied no, he just walked that way after he healed. Normally, a young healthy teen should heal to normal, so in the back of my mind, I wondered if he had an emotional component. We continued with the therapy for his back and a couple of weeks into it, I asked if he was willing to try a gentle treatment to heal the back and hip. He consented and we went into a private room where he lay supine and I put my hands on either side of his tight hip. He did some deep breathing and took his awareness into the hip area. After a few minutes, his leg started to twitch. I explained that this was normal and for him to let it continue to get the natural release. The leg than started to rock back and forth, and my client had a crystal-clear memory of the incident of the original injury 40 years earlier! He related the incident, which had emotional components, started to cry, and worked through his feelings. He gained understanding of that event, which he claimed was lost from his memory until that moment. At the end of the treatment, the foot/leg stopped rocking and when he stood, his legs aligned in a normal position! It never went back to the turned in posture, even after 40 years of walking that way.

This is one of the many examples of how SER can work. Not everyone has such a clear result, but each treatment is healing in the most appropriate way for the client. See my book: “SIMPLE HEALING Five Steps to Heal the Body and Soul” on Amazon for more stories and easy ways to heal at home.
